Call for step change in energy efficiency to avoid disastrous impacts on countryside

CPRE report shows we need to massively reduce energy requirements and generate low carbon energy to tackle impacts of climate change and reduce bills

A new report published today by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) shows that England needs a huge investment in energy efficiency if we are to even approach our 2050 carbon reduction target and avoid inflicting widespread damage on the countryside.

Bizarrely at exactly the same time last Thursday, there were two very similar decisions being made about planning applications, one in Ticehurst by Rother, and one three miles away in neighbouring Wadhurst by Wealden.

The application to build five houses and a further large structure at Spring Barn Farm was refused by South Downs National Park Authority Planning committee at their meeting on 9 April 2015.

Gray Wood campsite: Appeal dismissed

Written by William Shaw

Following vociferous local opposition, and objections from CPRE Sussex's John Hurwood, the Planning Inspectorate has dismissed this appeal in favour of developing a campsite in ancient woodland near East Hoathley.

This has been a challenging year in Lewes.

The District's claim to a 5-year housing supply was lost at an appeal early in 2014. This led to a number of applications for development of rural greenfield sites in the Low Weald villages being rushed forward. These were taking advantage of the consequent presumption in favour of sustainable development and offering only the low, historic, level of affordable housing required by the old 2003 Local Plan rather than the 40% shown to be viable for such sites and included in the new Local Plan.
