Mid-Sussex District Report: Winter 2013

Wednesday, 20 November 2013 09:56

The major issue is for 10,000 new homes on precious countryside between Sayers Green and Henfield – ‘Mayfields Market Town’.

An application by the Borde Hill estate owners to build a big housing estate at Penlands Farm on the north western edge of Horsham and another next door at Sugworth Farm (though that seems to be on hold).

The one that's newest to me, and definitely not on the map, involves an existing planning application to the north of Haywards Heath on the boundary with Lindfield for 15 Banner Homes in the grounds of a Grade 2* house called Sunte House off Birchin Lane, Lindfield. That's not major in itself (and will almost certainly go through); but the same landowners own much more open land on the other (northern) side of Sunte Hose, and Crest Nicholson have just acquired an option to buy a large parcel of that land. Unfortunately I have no more details as to the number of houses that could lead to.

It matters by virtue of the size of the threat, the damage to the setting of a heritage asset (Grade 2* listed building), and the potential for encroachment of the urban environment onto green fields in the direction of the Ouse valley.

A planning application by Wates, to build about 140 houses in Lindfield was, sadly, approved by the Council and is now going ahead.
