Gatwick
Letter to the Times:
Heathrow is not the answer, Thunderer, 26 Sept 2016
It may be that ‘Heathrow is not the answer’ (Thunderer, 26 September), but the Airport Commission, prominent Sussex MPs and local people are clear that a second runway at Gatwick would not deliver the economic gains sought by the Government. The proposed runway is in the wrong place to benefit most of the UK and will fail to rebalance growth away from the South East.
While pursuing growth in the wrong place, expanding Gatwick would also compromise the quality of life of many local communities and the special landscapes and historic buildings at the heart of the Sussex countryside.
It is alleged that Gatwick comes ‘at a lower environmental and financial cost and with much less risk’. How are these claims substantiated?
Ultimately, this is not a choice between growing the economy and protecting the environment. Expanding Gatwick is a rejection of both.

"A decision to expand Gatwick is not a choice between protecting the environment or growing the economy. It means rejecting both. And in doing so it would betray local residents, future generations and businesses across the whole of the UK."
Biggest destruction of British heritage since the Blitz if Gatwick expands
Written by CPRE SussexCampaigners against Gatwick expansion have united to hold a rally on Friday, July 1 2016 at the ancestral farm of one of Henry VIII’s wives to highlight the devastation Gatwick expansion would wreak on British heritage in the southeast. At today’s rally, the campaign groups unveiled a new document outlining the irreversible impact Gatwick expansion will have on British heritage, local history and the environment.
Gatwick Airport expansion will have a detrimental affect on communities in the wider surrounding area, overload the local transport infrastructure, add massive pressure to the local housing system and above all, destroy the tranquility of the countryside and its communities.
CPRE Sussex joined GACC, CAGNE and Sussex MPs at 10 Downing st today (16 May) to ask the Prime Minister not to support expansion at Gatwick airport.

A group opposed to possible Gatwick Airport expansion has said if it goes ahead, it will cause “misery” to commuters on the Brighton to London railway line.
This comes as Brighton and Hove City Council expressed its support for an expansion at Gatwick.
Further delay on Gatwick Decision opens “a minefield of uncertainties”
Written by CPRE SussexAnother anticipated delay in the decision on airport expansion has been met with frustration by countryside campaigners who say its leaves rural communities vulnerable and in limbo.
“We are disappointed that they keep delaying such an important announcement,” says CPRE Sussex Director, Kia Trainor. “The focus should not be on whether Heathrow can meet air quality targets, but the fact that expanding either Heathrow or Gatwick will cause significant and unacceptable levels of air pollution.
