Fracking: National CPRE "deeply concerned"

Responding to the government’s Strategic Environmental Assessment environmental report for further onshore oil and gas licensing,  CPRE National Office have issued a 14 page document raising fundamental concerns about shale gas exploration and extraction, otherwise known as "fracking".
The report, downloadable below, warns that:

  • the precautionary principle is not being applied sufficiently
  • fracking will produce cumulative negative effects on the landscape
  • fracking will contribute to climate change
  • current plans offer limited environmental protection, particularly to National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • the current regulatory and mitigation system is not sufficient to protect the countryside from the threats created by fracking.
