Arun District Report

Tuesday, 05 June 2012 18:39

April 2012

As part of its Local Plan preparation process, Arun DC has over the winter been consulting its parish and town councils on the ‘provisional spatial distribution’ of new housing in the District, and also its statutory consultees on the policy content of the new Plan, with final public consultation scheduled from July.

There is also to be an update of the 2009 Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment, perhaps reflecting the likelihood that under the new National Planning Policy Framework (#47) ADC will, as an “under-delivering” Authority, be expected to find sites for 20 per cent more new homes than are ‘objectively assessed’ to be necessary - or are otherwise required under the (still unrevoked) South East Plan.

Notwithstanding ADC’s recent conditional approval of 600 units at Courtwick Lane (Littlehampton) – a site that was supposed to be an LDF development option – developers continue to use Arun’s alleged land-supply shortfall to justify applications to develop greenfield sites beyond existing settlement boundaries.   Although successful in their appeal against refusal of permission to build north of Burndells Road (Yapton), the developers were however refused their costs and ADC have commendably rejected applications in respect of Goodacres and Eastgate Lanes (Barnham).
